Alte Thorschenke

The hotel Alte Thorschenke is one of the oldest and well known wine taverns in Germany. It is part of a city wall and the ”Enderttor” (Endert gate) which was built in 1332 on demand of Balduin Earl of Luxemburg. Travellers who went by post coach to Cologne or Frankfurt took up residence here. During Romanticism the Alte Thorschenke was the object of painters and poets. It has always been a place to gather. The history of the Alte Thorschenke is closely connected with the city of Cochem and the castle. Very few nations haven’t visited Cochem yet. Over the centuries our ancestors went through this old town gate. As a symbol of old and new Moselle romantic the town gate and the tavern remained. The old tradition of hospitality is cultivated ever since. There is no city guide who does not mention the “Alte Thorschenke” and it is likely to be the most photographed builing in Cochem. You can also see it in various travel guides.
